ROPE INSTALLATION
In collaboration with IA Architects and Commodore Builders, this office installation for Silicon Labs translates the mathematical elegance of the Smith Chart (a cornerstone tool in RF engineering) into a physical, rhythmic experience. This chart maps complex impedance transformations with gridlines that compress and expand radially, creating distinct zones of visual density. We reinterpreted this compression as a linear pattern, where rope spacing varies from 1.5" to 4" in an undulating wave that cycles through moments of density and release across three custom steel frames.
For engineers, the piece is a subtle easter egg — a tangible manifestation of standing wave patterns and impedance transformation. For everyone else, it's a meditative study in rhythm and systematic variation. Over three thousand feet of ropes are secured by 162 double fisherman's knots, each finished with linen-wrapped ends. The knots cluster in wider-spaced zones, functioning as calibration points where the pattern is most expansive, creating visual punctuation and balance across the total 59-foot span.
